Glossary of key terms

Two sentence definitions of key-terms that are used in our research project. We will be slowly building (and refining) this list as our writing progresses!

APOPHENIA: the perception of patterns within random data where there are no actual connections. An analogue example of apophenia is the human tendency to recognise animals or faces in clouds.

DATAFICATION:  the rendering of individual behaviours and institutional practices into digital data that can be collected, processed and ultimately inform what subsequently takes place within a school or classroom. The notion of datafication draws attention to how data leads to new systems of institutional control and governance, as well as new ways of how individuals understand their own relations to schools and schooling.
